First Quantum Minerals is a Canadian mining company seeking to develop Botswana’s enormous coal reserves. First Quantum Minerals plans to export most of the coal to South Africa, which would raise Botswana's coal capacity by 350%, but the power would bypass the 47% of the population that still have no access to electricity. Standard Chartered supports this by providing over US$ 700 million to First Quantum Minerals in direct loans and through underwriting its bonds.
