HSBC provides over US$ 2 billion in corporate loans and underwriting bonds for the Indonesian utility giant and coal power plant developer PLN Persero. In 2015, PLN was responsible for about 6,000 premature deaths due to air pollution. This number could almost double if PLN realised their plans to develop 28 new coal power plants. HSBC has supported this escalating health crisis with an appalling $2.3 billion per year since 2017.
