In reaction to Uniper's compensation claim against the Dutch state for its coal exit law, Sebastian Rötters, Energy Campaigner at Urgewald, said:
“Fortum’s subsidiary Uniper announced it will sue the Netherlands for its coal exit law. The Finnish state-owned company may even resort to using the Energy Charter Treaty to push its compensation claim through. With that move, Fortum showed its true colors. Just a few days ago, the majority owner exchanged the leadership at Uniper. With Fortum managers now in the drivers seat, Uniper is suing the Dutch state for its barely Paris-aligned coal phase-out. Obviously, Fortum is seeking taxpayer compensation for Uniper’s ignorant coal investment decisions of the past.”
