Inclusive Connectivity and Rural Infrastructure Project

Status: Approved
Timeframe: 2024-2029
Area: Côte d’Ivoire
AIIB Investment Amount: 200 million USD
Total Project Cost: 571.2 million USD
Co-financier: World Bank

E&S Category: B

Project details: The project aims to upgrade and climate-proof roads in 11 regions of northern Côte d’Ivoire, enhancing transport connectivity and access to essential services. It includes climate-resilient rural infrastructure, support of agricultural logistics, and strengthening of institutional capacity for road safety and maintenance.

Project Concerns:

The project raises several concerns, including probable land loss, occupation of private or public land by construction equipment, and destruction of crops. The ESMF explicitly points out the risk of involuntary resettlement or economic displacement due to possible expropriation.
Based on the latest available documents, the first road construction is scheduled to begin in Q1 2025, but as of now, no data is available on the specific resettlement impact or the number of affected people. This is highly concerning since construction might have already started.
