HSBC's dirty investment in Adaro & Itochu

HSBC provides direct loans to Adaro and Itochu who are responsible for the 2,000 MW Batang project in Indonesia on Java’s Northeast coast. It has been met with enormous resistance from local communities. The reaction to their peaceful protests has been a wave of threats and violence, culminating in attacks on local landowners by the army, police and hired thugs to force them to relinquish their lands. Indonesia’s power development goals could easily be met with the country’s abundant renewable energy resources. But the lack of sustained government support for renewables is holding back the growth of renewables while a wave of new coal projects floods the country.
